Fall Series Race Day #5 Recap

Who would have guessed that the two best days of sailing would have been the last two weekends of October?  We had yet another beautiful day with nice winds out of the northwest.   Four boats were out (Mantis, RIO, Coir Jaot and Vindr Knifr) and we got in three race before the clouds rolled in and the rain started.

The wind direction once again favored Randy Blair’s tri-hull with a reach on the “downwind” leg.  We even saw the mighty pink spinnaker flying today.  Randy needs about an 8 minute lead in a 1 hr race to beat the SJ21′s.   It was really close at the end of Race #1 between him and Tim Lynch.

Race #2 was shortened to once around as the winds went light.   We had a bit of a break between race #2 and #3 as we waited for it to fill back in.  We did a quick tie up at the dock to stretch our legs, watch a freight train go by, and ponder the grey clouds building in the west.

The winds did fill back in, with less intensity than feared and we started Race #3.  Tim Lynch ran aground during the 2nd upwind leg (that sandbar on the south side of the river is WAY out there), but recovered nicely on the downwind leg to give the Murphy’s a run to the finish.  Jeff and Jess once again held close and may have beat the SJ21′s on handicap.

All in all it was a great race series.  Can’t wait till the Christmas party to see the overall results.

As always, we appreciate Wes and Robbie’s effort in setting the course, running the races and picking up after. The series would have not have been possible without their donation of time.
